CASE STUDY

With a long history in spirit production, Black Ivory Gin has been crafted by the people of Dublin for generations. Made with passion and using the finest of ingredients, Black Ivory Gin encapsulates the rugged but bountiful wild herbs and botanicals that Ireland’s East Coast has to offer.

The Challenge: how do we create a visual identity, as well as the packaging design, that is both simplistic, but elegant.

/ OVERVIEW:

Having been established since 1763, Black Ivory Gin was keen on a trademark logo that incorporated an hourglass. Not only is an hourglass a symbol for time, but, to the company, it also represents the turning of each generation as they continue the work of the generation before them with the same passion and dedication.

Wanting a unique take on an hourglass, the illustration created takes inspiration from the masks used by plague doctors during the Middle Ages.

As an added touch, the vertical lines making the tomb stone’s platform is Black Ivory’s name spelled in barcode alphabet.

Feeling that an all black background was too flat when it came to the packaging design, it was concluded that a subtle pattern was needed.

Juniper berries being the core ingredient to making gin, various small illustrations of the plant were then arranged into a repetitive pattern and color tested at various opacity levels.
